Closed Head Injury: How Air Reaches the Cranial Venous Sinus?
نویسنده
چکیده
Air in the intracranial vascular compartment is uncommon, with only few reported case in the literature. In the absence of surgery or open head trauma, the origin of air bubbles in the venous sinus is still debated. We report a case of patient admitted in emergency room few minutes after a severe closed head injury, and in whom, the cranial CT-scan demonstrated feature of air along the superior sagittal sinus. Mechanisms explaining how air reaches the venous compartment will be discussed. *Corresponding author: Abad Cherif El Asri, Department of Neurosurgery, Military Hospital, Rabat, Morocco, E-mail: [email protected] Received March 22, 2012; Accepted May 23, 2012 Published May 25, 2012 Citation: El Asri AC (2012) Closed Head Injury: How Air Reaches the Cranial Venous Sinus? Early Spontaneous Recanalization of Sigmoid Sinus Thrombosis Following a Closed Head Injury in a Pediatric Patient : A Case Report and Review of Literature
Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) following a closed head injury in pediatric patients is a rare condition, and an early spontaneous recanalization of this condition is extremely rare. A 10-year-old boy was admitted with a mild, intermittent headache and nausea five days after a bicycle accident. The brain computed tomography showed an epidural hematoma at the right occipital area with pn...
متن کاملDural Sinus (Cerebral Venous) Thrombosis in a Pediatric Trauma Patient: A Rare Complication After Closed Head Injury.
OBJECTIVE Closed head injury rarely predisposes patients, particularly children, to the development of dural sinus thrombosis. In addition, most cases of sinus thrombosis are subacute in nature. The following is a case report of a precipitous course of dural sinus thrombosis after closed head injury in a pediatric trauma patient. DESCRIPTION A 14-year-old African American girl presented to th...
متن کاملEVALUATION OF CRANIALIZATION TECHNIQUE IN T HE TREATMENT OF FRONTAL SINUS FRACTU RES
Frontal sinus fractures are of surgical importance because of the microbial flora covering the frontal air sinus and it's proximity with the duramater and brain. There is an increased risk of meningitis when fracture of the posterior wall of the frontal sinus is associated with a dural tear. In this condition, communication occurs between the contaminated space of the air sinus and the intr...
متن کاملDural sinus thrombosis following head injury: report of two cases and review of the literature.
Dural sinus thrombosis (DST) usually involves the sagittal, transverse and sigmoid sinuses and is more common in women due to pregnancy, puerperium and oral contraceptive use. Other etiologies include coagulopathies, infection and head injury. We have present two DST cases following head injury. The first case was a 35-year-old man hospitalized because of one-week history of headache and repeat...
متن کاملTraumatic Dural Venous Sinus Injury
OBJECTIVE The importance of traumatic dural venous sinus injury lies in the probability of massive blood loss at the time of trauma or emergency operation resulting in a high mortality rate during the perioperative period. We considered the appropriate methods of treatment that are most essential in the overall management of traumatic dural venous sinus injuries. METHODS We conducted a retros...
